Resolutions in setting goals for the farming year ahead? Definitely. As the year commences, the renewed stockman needs to have a solid direction of how they will tackle the craft that is livestock production. Of course there were some things you erred on, and some you had achieved. Now, a new year is upon us, new opportunities, new trends and new goals to be smashed.
The Bible urges us to be intentional in our approach to success, Habakkuk 2:2 says, ‘And the Lord answered me saying, Write the vision and make it plain upon tables, that He may run that reads it.’ It talks about writing your dreams down, such that they are no longer dreams but plans. The transition from dreams to plans enables them to be achievable, and as you read them, you will be motivated to work at manifesting it.
All of these plans need one’s mind to be renewed. Mindset change is the most powerful tool you can use to achieve all your dreams in 2022. It is important to come to a realization and self-evaluation and take necessary steps to change the undesirables of 2021 and actually embrace the New Year.
For example, if you have realized that in 2021, your errors were keeping the buck for a long time and subsequently sabotaging your lambing weights, then in this year, have a buck replacement plan that is time sensitive. If you are not happy with the way your animals kept getting sick and had to cost you on medicines and treatment, maybe intensify your herd health approach.
Of course there are commendable things to feel proud of from the previous year, you are still standing you have not given up, you are still passionate.
To win in this field in this year, there is only one resolution: BE BETTER. Doable? It should be.
Be better in your approach, be better in your monitoring skills, be better in treating your assistants, be better in wanting to be better. Just be an all-round better farmer. Being better speaks to all processes that you were slacking on, there is always something to improve on.
Moreover, go digital. Take advantage of social media platforms to put your product out there. The world is moving swiftly to the digital space, be current. Familiarize yourself with these trends to be able to be competitive and relevant. Direct your energy to building your brand and afford you the opportunity to engage with people in the same field as you, with that being said:
This year, if you haven’t yet, actively seek a mentor and collaborative groups. Belong to support groups and cooperatives that pull in the same direction as you. The feeling of collective efforts will give you a sense more elevated responsibility toward your craft as well as accountability.
Finally, brethren, Be Professional
Treat your livestock production the same way you treat other businesses. Focus on providing clear vision to your helpers while giving them an opportunity to interact with your animals freely. Be timely. Respond to activities in a timely manner. Promote positivity on the farm and you will have a happy workforce that is eager to do every task. They will give respect, to both you and your animals.
This year, we farm happily.
